When Will Developers Learn?

Sadly, this will not be a free upgrade for existing Tweetie for iPhone users, as Britcher considers this to be (and has made it) a completely new app. Still, it’s easily worth the price.

This is the one thing about paid software that bugs the hell out of me. When I buy a license for the application I expect a free (or at least reduced price) upgrade. Not because I hate developers and don’t value the work they’ve put into the app, but because my positive reviews and recommendations for the app over others warrants it.

If I drove one extra person to buy the current tweetie, doesn’t that mean I’ve paid the price of the upgrade? Did I not in a way subsidize the development of the new version?

Maybe I just don’t use enough paid software1, but to charge for upgrades seems to ignore the support your current users give to you.

Let’s be clear here, I’m not against paying a reduced upgrade fee, I’m against users who have used the app and supported it (and the developer) being treated the same as users who never used it before. If those of us who bought the app and recommended it didn’t the developer wouldn’t have been able to justify releasing newer, better version.

I’m not against developers by any stretch of the imagination, I just think a lot of them get a little cocky and ignore the contributions their users make. We’ve supported his livelihood, is it too much to ask for a little thank you?

Wee nothing like deleting a whole post. Macworld highlights the fact that the app store doesn’t allow for upgrade pricing thus even if atebits wanted to do reduced upgrade pricing (which he says he did) he couldn’t. Therefore this post is irrelevant.
