I must need Viagra Because I Can’t Get Excited About Windows 7

Windows 7 is coming out on Friday and even though though I’m a lifelong windows users and this is the “best windows yet”1 I can’t get excited about it. I bought an upgrade way back in July from Amazon and nearly forgot I bought it. I’m sorry Microsoft I just can’t get up for your products anymore, especially one that is little more than a Vista service pack with a new skin.

I think Microsoft knows this, not for me personally, but for users in general. The commercials running up to the launch haven’t been “Buy Windows 7 because it’ll do this or this or that”, the commercials have been “Buy Windows 7 because it’s not Vista”. Other than upgrading an 8 year old OS I see no reason to justify needing Windows 7. Even its once dominate position of program support is gone. I can’t think of one program that would make me say “I can’t use OS X or Linux because…”. In fact I no longer search for Linux alternatives to Windows programs, I search for Linux alternatives to Mac programs or Windows alternatives to Linux programs. Outside of business and gaming (for now) I fear Windows is slowly slipping into irrelevance.
